UN Committee on Migrant Workers to review Kyrgyzstan

GENEVA (8 April 2015 ) – Kyrgyzstan’s record on protecting the rights of migrant workers is due to be reviewed by a UN Committee on 13 and 14 April in Geneva.

Kyrgyzstan is one of the 47 States Parties to the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families, and so is required to submit regular reports to the Committee on the Rights of Migrant Workers.

The Committee, which is composed of 14 international independent human rights experts will hold a public discussion with a delegation from the Kyrgyz Government, and also hear from representatives from NGOs, UN agencies and other entities.  

Venue: Room XI, Palais des Nations, Geneva
Time: 15:00 to 18:00 (19:00 to 22:00 in Bishkek ) on 13 April; 10:00 to 13:00 (14:00 to 17:00 ) on 14 April.
Among the possible issues for discussion are: National legislation on migration policies, bilateral and multilateral agreements with other countries, in particular Russia and Kazakhstan; measures to combat trafficking and smuggling of migrants; legal assistance for migrant workers in criminal and administrative proceedings; legal and labour protection for migrant workers, including in agriculture and domestic work sector.
