Recently, Stefan Ziegler, a Swiss expert in International Humanitarian Law and lecturer at the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights, arrived in Bishkek as part of his regional tour across Central Asia.
Ziegler met with students from the OSCE Academy and Ala-Too International University during guest lectures. The students showed strong interest in the topic and gained new insights into the real-life application of International Humanitarian Law. Ziegler was impressed by the engaging discussions and the students’ enthusiasm. He also held productive meetings with experts in International Humanitarian Law, including local stakeholders and Switzerland’s traditional international partners, such as the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN OHCHR) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
Also known for his work as a documentary filmmaker, Ziegler’s visit underscores Switzerland’s commitment to International Humanitarian Law. During the guest lecture, his documentary Broken was screened, followed by a lively Q&A session where students engaged directly with the filmmaker. Through the fusion of film and teaching, Ziegler raises awareness and inspires positive change. His latest film, The Mandate, draws on 25 years of humanitarian experience and seeks to spark global dialogue on international law. It has already been screened in several regions, with more showings planned around the world.
Switzerland’s support for International Humanitarian Law is rooted in its historic role as initiator and depositary of the Geneva Conventions. Since 1864, it has helped shape legal protection for civilians and combatants in conflict. Today, Switzerland remains the official depositary of the four Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols.
