Kyrgyz Republic is to improve early grade reading quality

Project USAID “Reading together” in  partnership with the National Testing Center of  Ministry of Education and Science of the Kyrgyz Republic is holding a round table on the 4th of December 2014 in Bishkek at the Park Hotel, 87, Orozbekov st.., for government and regional educational institutions and international organizations working in this field to discuss the results of the early grade reading assessment in primary school (EGRA), conducted in 130 schools of Kyrgyzstan and to develop the recommendations for the use of the data received to improve the reading skills and comprehension of the  primary grade students.

Updated National Action Plan on the Prevention and Reduction of Statelessness in the Kyrgyz Republic

27 November, Bishkek – Today, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Kyrgyzstan and the State Registration Service under the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic jointly held the fifth High-Level Steering Meeting on the Prevention and Reduction of Statelessness in Kyrgyzstan. Government officials, civil society representatives, and experts came together in order to take stock of the implementation of the National Action Plan on the Prevention and Reduction of Statelessness in Kyrgyzstan, and to discuss the way forward.

EBRD finances its first wind farm in Kazakhstan

50 MW wind power project in Yereymentau will road-test new renewables legislation which EBRD helped develop. In a landmark project for Kazakhstan’s renewables industry, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is supporting the first large-scale wind farm in the country to be financed under the new feed-in-tariff mechanism.

GENEVA (26 November 2014) – A group of United Nations human rights experts* have urged the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan to reject a bill that would introduce criminal and administrative sanctions for acts aimed at forming “a positive attitude towards non-traditional sexual orientation.”

Kyrgyzstan updates its plan for potential influx of refugees

Bishkek, 25 November (UNHCR) – UNHCR and the Ministry of Emergency Situations jointly convened the 3rd High level Working Group on Contingency Planning. High-level officials from various government and UN agencies participated in the event in order to update the Joint UNHCR/Government Contingency Plan. This plan was developed during the First Joint High Level Working Group in April 2013. During 2014, the Kyrgyz Government and UNHCR have worked together in order to adjust the plan in accordance with current priorities.
