Culture of abduction, rape and forced marriage violates women’s rights in Kyrgyzstan, UN experts find

GENEVA (18 September 2018) — Women in Kyrgyzstan suffer grave and systematic violations of their human rights due to a culture of abduction, rape and forced marriage, the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women found in an inquiry published today into so-called “bride kidnapping” in the country.

Lawyers Improving Consultation Skills at Free Legal Aid Centers in Kyrgyzstan

On September 10-14, 2018, over 50 lawyers, attorneys, and public notaries, who provide legal consultation at Free Legal Aid Centers, are receiving a training to improve the skills for professional communication with recipients of legal services. The training is hosted by the Ministry of Justice of the Kyrgyz Republic, with the support of the USAID Collaborative Governance Program and the joint project of the Finnish Foreign Ministry - UNDP "Towards a sustainable access to justice for legal empowerment in the Kyrgyz Republic".

UN torture prevention experts to visit Kyrgyzstan

GENEVA (5 September 2018) — The United Nations Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT) will make its second visit to Kyrgyzstan from 11 to 22 September. The Subcommittee will assess measures taken to protect persons deprived of their liberty against torture and ill-treatment, and look into progress made in implementing the recommendations made following its first visit in 2012.
